I’ve always been a Beckinsale baby. I liked her in Underworld. I like her in Click. I liked her in Underworld 2. And I couldn’t wait until they released Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans – the much anticipated prequel to the much loved series where girls like me drool at our lovely British actress.

To my half disappointment, Kate is seen for about 10 seconds in the whole movie. And that appears in the end. Somebody made up for it though. No spoilers here but just a warning: Rhona Mitra looks so much like Kate Beckinsale, for the whole duration of the movie, I was in the entire mindset that Princess Sonja was actually Kate.

Kate or Rhona?

10 on the Vampire Hotness Scale

Luckily, Rhona is such a hot girl, you sort of forget about Kate’s million dollar absence. True to the female power Underworld has given its lead character, Princess Sonja kicks some major werewolf butt too. Some sword-fighting and regal authority gives us lezzies enough satisfaction to ignore the love scenes with Michael Sheen (as Lucian).

It’s good to watch Underworld and Underworld 2 first before catching the 3rd installment – everything will align better, and you’ll avoid the mistake of me and my gf looking at wide-eyed Michael Sheen and asking oursleves, “Wasn’t he someone in Underworld?”.

He could use a bath. Or two.

Overall a so-so movie, Beckinsale-less Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans is still worth your $2 – if only to catch Rhona Mitra. Its bloody, dirty, muddy, stinky and haircombless-y. Everything you’d expect from a vampire vs. werewolf movie. And you can coo at the cute little werewolves if you want, too.

If Kate Beckinsale were actually there, and she and Rhona Mitra got it on, I’d toss this movie another half a cherry.
