Recession Toughest on Gays and Lesbians?

In the beginning of the recession…

Boss: Be good, you will be fine.

After a week…

Must work hard, okay?

After a month

Must work hard you bugger!

After a Quarter

Can you hear me? You must work hard!!!

This amusing piece of animation has been passed on emails since the recession began. Imagine that yellow chick to be a pink one: I personally think the recession is harder on the LGBT community. Less pink money coming in, less advocacy and donations, more employers are laying off staff, and not many are hiring. Lets face it, discrimination still puts gays and lesbians in the frontlines when the firing range comes up. And it will be hard to get a new job.

Not to mention the fact that most of us do our advocacy on the side. Economic priorities will now take front and center. It will be harder to come out at work without the protection of an anti-dicrimination law.

A lot of the gay and lesbian groups I’ve joined have posts where in successful community members (business owners, writers, etc.) have been on the job market for 6 months already, but without success. Their partners are doing what they can to hold the fort, but then again the lack of benefits and tax breaks married-couples enjoy are now hitting home more deeply than ever.

The recession really makes the realization dawn on us: we need our civil rights. We really do. It will protect us not just from social discrimiation, but from starvation as well. I hope a formal study can prove this. Right now I am basing on instinct, but hopefully somebody out there has thought of it before.

It is in this note that I hope that the people in the higher ups notice this fact. Or that we shouldn’t wait – we should let them know that what we are asking for are not privileges. They are rights. And at these times, we need them now. Like, this minute.

a hope for lesbian blog friendliness

The recession may be putting us down, but if we stand up and face it and make something good and histrocial come out of it, then it is a blessing. It is up to us.

lol lol…loved this!

yes it is toughest on us. there’s the tax cut, the social services benefits, and other peripherals that we are not entitled to.

and we go to the basics: how can you explain why you have to support your “roommate,” and not kick her out for not contributing rent money?

that’s why R-Rights is in the pink peso mode. we try as much as possible to patronize LGBT businesses and services, w/out compromising other important considerations like budget and quality.

will check out your blogs to know where to spend our hard-earned LGBT money.

thank you. keep writing! :-)

it’s toughest on all minorities including us queers of course.

hahahah that was hilarious. I dunno I’m not feeling the recession as bad myself but I guess I still have a job, and that maybe the reason. Tho not completely satisfied . I think what is important with gay’s and lesbians, especially lesbians since women only make less than men in a comparable job is that we need to work harder and make smarter choices. I’m not hating against liberal arts degrees and hippie tastic employment choices of many lezzies (which yes, you can make a good living out of), but we have to ask ourselves at a time like this, if this helps our chances if half our community is working retail for minimum wage or unemployed. Most lesbians I know are still struggling recession or not. I feel like this is more of a cultural issue as lesbians and not an economic one.

the economic recession has been pretty hard on us. there is a some good progress on the economy this year. i just hope that the economy will continue to recover in the following months and years.

I think we are also seeing some signs of recovery from the Economic Recession. Of course, we have no idea of how long it will take to completely recover, but some say it’s going to be longer than for the other recessions in decades. I also scanned an article yesterday that said business owners need a new set of tactics to do well during recovery.

during the height of the economic recession, our online and offline business in the US have suffered some major drop in sales. now our sales are getting slowly back to normal.
