Outraged at Outrage: Lack of Lesbian Representation

Philippines’ virginal and young Outrage Magazine recently came up with the feature entitled Stirred, AND Shaken… GLBTQIA Shakers and Movers written by an M.D. dela Cruz Tan, an article that supposedly showcases the 10 community members that helps break the bonds of the gay stereotype in the Philippines.

I could imagine the scenario in my head: the bulk of readership, advertisers and contact of Outrage are members of the community who were interested in men ie. gay men, bisexuals and trans (M-F). That is the only legitimate reason why I will try to rationalize their own fault of not exactly representing the whole community in the 10 LGBTQIA shakers they featured.

Anne Lim, lesbian president of GALANG (Gay and Lesbian Activist Network for Gender Equality), is certainly a shaker alright. And so are all the people featured namely:

JUDE BACALSO

JESUS MANUEL COBARRUBIAS JR.
PAU FONTANOS
ANNE LIM
HENRY LIM
DEXTER MEJIA
FR. RICHARD MICKLEY, OSAe, Ph.D.

Now, you can read the individual profiles of each shaker here and I’m sure you’ll all join me in congratulating them for the great great job they are doing in uplifting the LGBTQIA situation here in the country.

So what’s my problem?

My problem is they said “10 LGBTQIA Shakers”.

My problem is the breakdown of this 10 is: 1 token lesbian, 7 gay men, and 2 trans (M-F).

My problem is I can name 20 other lesbian community shakers out there who certainly deserve to be featured or at least, represent the lesbian community in such feats.

I can also name several bisexuals and trans (F-M).

And don’t kid me when they say that these people are the ones who really deserve to be called “shakers” and they simply ran out of room.

However, I also know that all I can do is rant and flame. The uneven split is highly reasonable given their marketing tactics. Outrage is a private magazine and they can feature whatever and whoever they want. Just like I can say whatever I want in my blog.

With due responsibility and fairness.

some of those gay men aren’t even much of shakers compared to the other dykes who should be there.
