In a nutshell, Obama’s new pick for Education secretary Arne Duncan, head of Chicago Public Schools, has been pushing for Chicago to start their first gay high school (view full article here).
The reason why?
“Supporters have said the Pride Campus would help students find a safe school environment because studies have shown that gay youth are at a greater risk of dropping out of school and abusing drugs and alcohol, and are two to three times more likely to attempt suicide. A 2003 district survey shows that gay and lesbian youths are three times more likely to miss school because they don’t feel safe.” – David Brody, CBN News
WTF???
I have several opinions against this:
1. Its a band-aid solution to a problem that maybe the Obama administration simply do not have the political will to tackle. Why not focus energy (and funds) on addressing the real problem, which is social discrimination and hate?
2. It is totally not helpful to the cause of integration and social acceptance. Why not put up an exclusive public school for black people also? Or for Mormons?
3. If “making a place safe for gay kids” is the rationale, then this is the stupidest idea ever. It even makes it easier for people to target gay kids because they know where they can be found. I can just see the vandalism and security problems this school is going to get. The schools could be bombed by religious terrorists and annihilate all the gay kid population in one area. Now, how gay friendly is that?
I am fuming over this matter.
