Graduation Blues: Where are the Proud Gay Parents?

I attended the elementary graduation of my brother yesterday. 167 graduates, 334 parents.

I had my eye out for a gay or lesbian couple who could be the proud parents of a graduate. I planned to approach them and shake their hand. I was already picturing the scene in my mind- surely there must be at least one?

Unfortunately, the program went on and I found that the statistics have failed me. Technically, 10% of the population should be gay, so doing all the calculations, there should be 16 gay couples in the graduation ceremony.

I could spot no one.

It can be that the 16 couples:

(1) opted not to have a child (was their generation really as different? It seems like a significant chunk of gays and lesbians wan to have children today);

(2) were not out of the closet

(3) did not enroll their kids on a Catholic school

(4) did not register because my gaydar is seriously malfunctioning

Should gay parents enroll their children in Catholic schools?

Should gay parents enroll their children in Catholic schools?

Most likely its a combination of all of these factors, with (3) contributing the most.

When I have a mini-me to feed, educate and dress up, I think I’ll still put him on a Catholic school, but educate him at home about the limitations. I’ll leave it up to him which path he takes. Then hopefully on graduation day, I’ll be there to represent a community.

Congratulations to all graduates. Perhaps now that you’re a bit more mature, you’ll understand why the Earth revolves around the sun, and not you.

a hope for lesbian blog friendliness

Graduations can be as straight as you principal’s ruler, but sooner or later we’ll have proud gay parents thrown in the ceremonies as well.

yeah… but would a catholic school allow you to enroll your mini-you?

true! parenthood is in. in 2006, i attended an LGBT conference abroad and there was an uproar over the lack of child-friendly facilities (and nappy-changing areas) in the conference hall.

we can add these to the list of reasons why there seems to be a dearth of LGBT parents:
— some of us go as single mothers/fathers. good luck, that will really test your gay-dar.

— some of us do not have our own, though we do “parenting.” my partner came home to attend the graduation of a nephew whom she basically raised. yesterday, she proudly went onstage to pin three out of his five medals.

psst…. dyke dialogue on parenting, on april 18.

NO WAY! save your kid from the hangups and the dogma. i didn’t go to a catholic school except for university and it was already so stifling. what more in elementary/hs?

hi again, queensilver :) we live in the philippines where most schools are catholic :) we’re a 3rd world country so public schools are out of the question :) i’m not saying we don’t have a choice. we do. just very limited if we take out the catholic schools.

Hey – wondering why you used a pic of my son’s adoption for your graduation post? Would you mind removing it, please? Thanks.
